ABA in the home
In the home parents use ABA techniques to generalise skills learned in school to this environment and into the community. ABA can also be used successfully by parents to increase appropriate behaviours and address any issues in daily living skills. Areas that are often addressed by parents in this way are play with siblings, bedtime routines, eating, dressing, and leisure activities such as trips to the park, cinema etc.
At Stepping Stones most parent training is carried out in relation to specific issues. Parents are welcome to come into the school to see staff work with their child and are given the opportunity to implement the techniques with staff present. Interventions are developed by school staff to be implemented by parents at home. Parents receive written and verbal instructions about how home interventions should be implemented and monitored, and on the science behind them.
Community trips are an important part of many of the children’s programs. Staff members bring children out of the school and teach them appropriate behaviour in a number of community settings, which have been chosen by the parents (for example shopping centres, libraries, restaurants or shops). Parents often accompany staff on these trips and learn first hand how to use ABA to teach their children appropriate behaviour in these settings.
