Overview

Applied Behaviour Analysis is the science of behaviour change. In simple terms it involves breaking down tasks into small achievable steps, each step building on the previous one. Data is taken to guide teaching and rewards called ‘reinforcers’ are given for correct responses. Incorrect responses are corrected, ignored or redirected.

History of ABA

ABA is usually traced back to the work of B.F. Skinner in the 1960s, but is based on theories and discoveries made throughout the history of psychology. ABA has been used to address and change behaviours of people with autism since the 1960s. In 1987 Dr. Lovaas published a peer reviewed paper looking at the effectiveness of an early intensive ABA treatment program for children with autism, which raised awareness and increased the prevalence of this type of education worldwide.

Why use ABA?

There are many treatments for autism, and many claims of their effectiveness. The only way to test the effectiveness of any intervention is to subject it to rigorous controlled scientific analysis. ABA as a treatment for children with autism has been directly and systematically tested using objective measurements and controlled studies. These tests have been independently and publicly verified. No other treatment or education intervention for children with autism has shown comparable effectiveness when subjected to this type of scientific evaluation.

Why Stepping Stones uses ABA

The aim of Stepping Stones is to provide the best learning environment for children with autism. Research has shown ABA to be the best teaching and treatment method for children with autism and it is therefore the method used in Stepping Stones. At Stepping Stones, ABA is used in all aspects of curriculum planning, teaching and staff training.
